Namakan, Sand Point and Crane lakes. Namakan Lake is 25,130 acres, located along the border between Minnesota and Ontario. The lake has a rocky irregular shoreline and tannin stained water typical of Canadian Shield lakes. The Minnesota portion (12,322 acres) is located within the boundaries of Voyageurs National Park. Namakan Lake is part of the Namakan Reservoir, which also includes Crane, Kabetogama, Little Vermilion and Sand Point lakes. There is no road access on the Minnesota side of the lake. Most anglers gain access by traveling via boat or snowmobile from road access points located on Crane or Kabetogama Lakes. A mechanical portage does exist at Kettle Falls located where Namakan flows into the east end of Rainy Lake. Sand Point Lake is 8,869 acres, located along the border between Minnesota and Ontario. Sand Point Lake has a rocky irregular shoreline. The Minnesota portion (5,179 acres) is located within the boundaries of Voyageurs National Park. There is no road access on the Minnesota portion of the lake. Crane Lake is a 3,088 acre, 80 foot deep lake located 28 miles northeast of Orr, MN. The lakes northern shore forms part of the boundary to Voyageurs National Park. Crane Lake is an entry point into the Park as well as U.S. Customs port for seaplane traffic. The Crane Lake community is comprised of resorts, restaurants, shops, marinas, outfitters and houseboat rentals with golfing nearby. This is a four-season recreation area. The miles and miles of lakes and waterways offer world-class fishing from May-October then freeze over to welcome some of the best ice fishing around! Snowmobiling is a popular winter pastime with access to many miles of trails in both Minnesota and Ontario. Cross-country skiers and snowshoe enthusiasts may enjoy the solitude of the back country and wilderness areas.

To fish the Ontario waters of Namakan, Sand Point, Rainy Lake and other Ontario lakes, you will need to obtain a Remote Access Border Crossing permit to enter these waters. You will need an Ontario Non-Resident Fishing License which is obtainable at most ports of entry. Additionally, you will need to purchase Canadian bait if you fish with live bait.
